Counter Spell Playtest
NERO® Counter Spell Playtest
Version 1.0 3-21-12
For NERO Rules: Travis Fauber
This playtest is designed to allow casters a defensive ability much like a parry or dodge against other spell casters and creatures.
In this playtest a caster receives a counter spell ability for every four levels.
Example: a 20th level caster will be able to have five counter spells
Cast on the Fly Rules:
Now what is a counter spell, it is an ability to block a spell of the same level by giving up one of equal level from you tree to block it. This is only if the chapter uses Cast on the Fly Rules, for Memroization Rules see below.
Example: Micha is hit with a magic taint blood by a Lich, he has seven counter spells being level 30. He also still has a level five spell in memory, so instead of letting the magic taint blood blow his shield magic. He yells Counter Spell thus blocking the attack and removing his level five spell from his memory.
Memorization Rules:
If a chapter uses memorization, then counter spell works the same except. The caster has to have the same spell in memory.
Example: Jeeves is hit with a magic death by the same Lich, he has three counter spells being level 12. He also still has a Life/Death spell in memory, so instead of letting the magic death blow his shield magic. He yells Counter Spell thus blocking the attack and removing his Life/Death spell from his memory.
Counter Spell abilities will reset every time the chapter has a re-up period.
Example: If a chapter re-ups 6pm-6am-6pm etc... for spells so does the characters ability to counter spell re-up.
Keep in mind a caster must have a free hand to be able to Counter Spell a spell. So having a shield or a weapon in a hand will not let the character Counter a Spell. Much like a fighter having a weapon in his hand to be able to parry. Templars or broken scholars may tuck their weapon before being hit so they may call their Counter Spells.
Then the last part to keep in mind, a character can Counter Spell for an ally this is in hands reach. Just like a fighter can parry for his caster, a caster can Counter Spell for his fighter.
This playtest is to enhance the roleplay experience of all players in the 9th edition system.

T,
Beautiful! this really gives casters a dimension that they have been missing. I hope this one spreads to other chapters!

Re: Counter Spell Playtest
Can I use this as a celestial scholar vs. earth spells? For example, that spell chucking lich hits me with a death, can I give up an imprison to counter it?

Re: Counter Spell Playtest
Ben,
Yes & No our Chapter is a Memorization Chapter, but in-game there is a way for Characters to learn how to cast on the fly. So at first being new to the lands you won't be able to, but if you discover how to be able to do it in-game, then yes you can trade a imprison for a death spell.

Hey T,
I thought it was going to only work Spell-to-Spell?
Not a level-per-level.
